The Torrent Jabberwalker

The Torrent Jabberwalker, found at jabberwalker.com.ar is an excellent BitTorrent meta search engine that I have been using for sometime. It searches all the popular torrent sites, including TorrentSpy and Seedler, and displays all the results on one page. It’s easily the best BitTorrent search engine around.

Note: the Jabberwalker sometimes goes offline with server issues, but so far it has always come back after a short while.

µTorrent

µTorrent is an excellent BitTorrent application I have recently begun using. Even though it’s only a single 154 kilobyte .exe, it has all the features I could ever need. It also has an appealing interface, it’s easy to use, and it’s completely stable.

Look at the download size! There’s no excuse not to try it out.

Japanese/anime emoticons (kaomoji but not really)

Japanese-style emoticons (also known as anime emoticons, verticons, or kaomoji) differ from conventional emoticons because they are viewed vertically. These emoticons borrow heavily from the anime drawing style, with a lot of expression shown using the eyes. These emoticons are often abbreviated by leaving off the parentheses, so (^_^) will become ^_^. They can be further abbreviated by leaving out the mouth, so ^_^ becomes ^^. The longer the mouth, the stronger the emoticon’s meaning.

This list contains examples of these emoticons that can be created using plain ASCII characters (so they’re not really kaomoji, but still).

Thanks to everyone that has contributed to the list.

flOw

flOw is a Flash game created by Jenova Chen and Nicholas Clark. You start off as a tiny creature swimming in a deep pool, and as the game progresses you get bigger and go deeper.

The game has nice sound and graphics, but the most notable aspect is the gameplay, which naturally unfolds and becomes more complex as new features and gameplay elements are introduced. There are no instructions that you need to read before you can play—you just get thrown in. New features and gameplay elements are introduced in a very natural way.

flOW is a short but rewarding game, and I recommend playing it.

Plasma Pong

Plasma Pong is the classic game of pong with the mesmerising twist of fluid dynamics—that’s the plasma.

You can shoot plasma from your paddle by holding the left mouse button, and suck the plasma back by holding the right mouse button. The screen starts filling up with the plasma, and the ball gets carried along through the waves of it. When you suck the plasma back, the ball will follow, and you can then release the right mouse button to shoot the ball back out.

The physics are matched by the psychedelic graphics; waves of multi-coloured plasma splash about and mingle while other sparks and particles swarm and spin like galaxies.

Plasma Pong also has a freeform sandbox mode, where you just play around with the system and the physics, which is as good as the actual Pong game.

It is based around a simple concept, so Plasma Pong may be lacking in replay value, but it’s certainly worth messing around with for a couple of hours.

Australian flag

The current Australian flag isn’t that great. I really like the design of the flag of the Australian Capital Territory:

The basic structure could be used for a national flag, with something other than the ACT coat of arms on the right. This design would work best if our national colours were blue and gold. I wish they were, but at the moment we’re stuck with the relatively awful green and gold (although blue and gold apparently are the heraldic colours of Australia). So, I propose that the national colours of Australia be changed when we bring in the new flag (and system of government?).

Baked Not Fried #1: Vegas

Possibly a semi-regular component of the blog. Probably not, because I just wanted to make a comic called Baked Not Fried. Click for the full size image, if you want.

Baked Not Fried is an unexpected and unfulfilling webcomic.

Racer

Racer is a great free racing/driving simulation. It started out as a basic driving simulation and has progressed into a fully-playable racing game, with AI and the lot, and it is constantly being improved. It’s highly realistic and a lot of fun, so check it out.
